EFFECTIVENESS OF VARIOUS METHODS OF POLITICAL CONTACT
It is very important to remember to particularly contact opponents of your views to let them know you are out there and you vote.
We talked with members of former Senator Dole's staff and below are their judgements on the effectiveness of the various ways to contact politicians:
1. The most effective is to send a typed letter with a hand addressed envelope. A hand written letter is good, but it must be legible or, it will not not be read. A typed envelope suggests a mass mailing, and may be viewed that way and not read.
2. Next most influential, is a postcard, providing the handwriting is legible. A "Six Card" method can be very managable with one each to the President, Speaker Pelosi, Leader Reid, your Senators, your Congressman, and/or State/local officials if appropriate to the issue.
3. A phone call to your elected official depends on who you talk to in the office; they may not correctly understand your position on an issue so work out your message in advance to make it simple and direct, and politely ask them to repeat the message to be sure they understood and wrote it down correctly.
4. A form letter that is just signed and repeated by others is viewed as part of a program, and given little weight.
5. Following an event like a national rally, if many of people call or write it hasn't nearly the impact that random letters, spaced over time, have; after a local event like ours, we can still be effective because for now our events are under most political radar.
6. An e-mail does not have the impact that a letter or phone call has, as we can't be sure how the e-mails are handled or considered, at best it may create a tick mark on whichever side of the issue one takes.
7. The least effective way to influence an elected official is through a petition. Although it is noted, it is difficult to determine if the people that sign a petition are voters in an official's district and if they truly believe what they signed or acted under group/peer pressure in the moment and without considered thought or deep commitment.
